As another course concludes on my journey to obtain a Master of Health Studies degree, I reflect on the good, the bad, and the ugly I have experienced. I have valued learning about and applying concepts of health promotion. The entirety of my career has been in acute care, and thus, I had to shift my mindset from healthcare being a response to illness to the mindset that healthcare can precede illness and, consequently, be a catalyst to enhance health. Although I struggled initially, I appreciate understanding the role of the determinants of health through an ecological perspective. This is especially true in the setting of Indigenous women’s health. Ironically, I enrolled in this program years ago after being frustrated with the healthcare system and wanting to have a broader impact on health. With this course being my 9th, I am finally starting to grasp the concept of my aspirations.

As intrigued as I was, this course was not without challenges. I was tested in new ways to grasp concepts that left me feeling doubtful and discouraged. However, with additional feedback and guidance, I was able to solidify my knowledge. I have always exhibited a passion for women’s health advocacy, and my chosen topic provided the motivation to understand health promotion in this context. However, as I read more about the health inequities experienced by Indigenous women (and Indigenous Peoples in general), I was left with a bitter taste. The effects of colonization continue to be experienced today and impact Indigenous health and wellness significantly. Yet, a vast majority of Canadians know so little about it. Why is this? It is startling.

Although this has been my most challenging course to date, I am pleased with my efforts and the knowledge I have gained. I am enrolled in the following health promotion course (MHST 632) and look forward to deepening my understanding of this healthcare stream. However, I anticipate I will likely experience similar challenges in the future. In this next course, I will be more conscious of seeking guidance and asking for help when needed.
